Welcome to CoastFest 2008

2008 will be an exciting year on Quebec's Lower North Shore, also known as the Coast.  The Coast is celebrating from village to village during an event called CoastFest 2008. Through various festivities and cultural events in 2008, follow in the footsteps of the explorers and discover the captivating culture and history of this region. CoastFest coincides with the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City by famous explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1608. CoastFest's traveling exhibit is accredited by the Quebec 400th anniversary committee.

CoastFest in Chevery! July 19-26:

Chevery’s week of CoastFest and Festival of the Arts and Tradeshows (FACTS) was jam-packed with events. The opening ceremonies included speeches from local dignitaries as well as special guests, performance of the CoastFest skit and an incredible selection of gourmet hors d'oeuvres made from local ingredients. The CoastFest interns helped the children participating in the day camp to put on a skit about the resettlement where houses were brought to Chevery. They also learned about mummering and the children put on a surprise "summer mummers" performance!

Morning beach walks and a photography tour to the Netagamiou falls gave people a chance to enjoy Chevery’s beautiful scenery. Coast artist Michael Osborne was a special guest at Chevery’s CoastFest celebrations and a selection of his beautiful artwork was on display all week at the Hall. He also conducted workshops about painting techniques.

The Conference part of FACTS brought together representatives from the CLD, SADC, Tourism Lower North Shore, QLF, and various community members to discuss the development of culture and heritage-based tourism and share information, ideas and experiences. Later, an evening of performances showcased Chevery’s talented musicians, and the singing and dancing went on late into the night! The Tradeshow was a great success, with many unique locally-made products for sale. This was followed by an evening of stories, poetry and drama.

The week ended on a high note with the annual Chevery summer carnival featuring games and prizes, water sports at the marina, and a big community potluck. The children participating in the Heritage Camp also built a bridge with found objects to symbolise the links between the past, present and future and all the communities of the Coast, which was unveiled at the celebrations. The Community Hall was full of food and folk and a great time was had by all!

Congratulations to Chevery's Culture and Tourism association, the Festival of the Arts, Conference and Tradeshow organizing committee and the many volunteers that made this week's events so successful.
